Paddleboarding at Camber Sands: A Beginner’s Guide

Paddleboarding on the East Sussex coast has quietly become one of the most popular ways to spend a morning here, and Camber Sands sits right at the heart of it. Whether you’ve never stood on a board before or you’re just new to this stretch of coast, here’s everything you need to get started.

Is Camber Sands good for paddleboarding?

In short, yes, and for good reason. Camber Sands has one of the widest, flattest beaches on the south coast, which means shallow water that eases you in gently rather than dropping away underfoot.

The bay itself is fairly sheltered too. On calm days the sea barely ripples, which is exactly what you want when you’re finding your balance for the first time.

Best conditions & times

A calm, glassy morning makes all the difference when you’re learning. A few things I always check before heading out:

  • Wind: Aim for light wind, ideally under 10mph, and avoid days with an offshore breeze
  • Tide: A rising tide close to high water tends to give the calmest, most forgiving conditions
  • Time of day: Early morning, before the wind picks up, is usually your best window
  • Season: Late spring through early autumn offers the warmest water and gentlest weather, though a good wetsuit extends the season nicely either side

If you’re at all unsure, a weather and tide app built for water sports beats guesswork every time.

Hire options nearby

You don’t need your own kit to get started. A short drive from the beach, Rye Watersports runs a paddleboard school on their coastal lake, which happens to be a lovely spot to build confidence away from any swell. Board and paddle hire is available by the hour, with no previous experience needed, and lessons are on hand if you’d rather have an instructor alongside you.

Beginner tips

A few things that helped me when I was starting out:

  1. Start on your knees. Get a feel for the board’s balance before standing.
  2. Keep your gaze on the horizon, not down at your feet. It helps steady you.
  3. Bend your knees slightly rather than locking them. A soft stance absorbs small wobbles.
  4. Paddle with your core, not just your arms. Rotate your torso with each stroke.
  5. Expect to fall in. Everybody does. It’s part of the fun, and the water here is shallow and forgiving.

Most beginner paddle boarding South Coast sessions click within the first half hour. It’s one of those sports that rewards patience over strength.

Safety

A calm sea can change quickly, so a little preparation goes a long way:

  • Always wear a leash connecting you to the board
  • Check the tide times and avoid paddling out on a strong outgoing tide, especially near the Camber Sands to Rye estuary stretch
  • Tell someone on shore roughly how long you’ll be out
  • Steer clear of designated swimming zones and any watersports Rye East Sussex marked boundaries
  • If in doubt about conditions, hire from a recognised local school rather than heading out alone

None of this should put you off. It simply means a happier, calmer time on the water.

After your paddle

We’re right by the beach, so you can rinse off, change, and be settled with a coffee within minutes. A gentle stretch in our daily yoga class, in the studio or wild on the sand, works beautifully to ease out any tired shoulders.

Between wellness events and community gatherings, something lovely is often happening alongside your paddle. And if you’d like to make a full weekend of it, take a look at Stay for our boutique rooms, most just a short walk from the water.

Choosing where to spend a birthday dinner in London can feel like a small project of its own. You want somewhere that suits the size of your group, somewhere that will not rush you off the table. We have hosted enough birthdays now to know exactly what makes an evening like this work, and we would love to help you plan yours.

We sit right on the water’s edge in Westbourne Park, where the Grand Union Canal drifts past our south-facing terrace and the light softens into something rather flattering by early evening. It is the kind of setting that does a lot of the work for you.
