Summer at Camber Sands: Your Guide to the Beach Holiday

Imagine waking up to the sound of the sea. Light floods through the windows, there’s a faint smell of salt in the air, and the only decision you need to make is whether to head straight to the beach or linger a little longer over breakfast. That’s what a Camber Sands summer feels like, and once you’ve felt it, you’ll keep coming back.

We’ve been welcoming guests to the dunes of East Sussex for years, and summer here never gets old. Whether you’re planning a long weekend or a full week by the water, this guide covers everything you need to know about spending summer in one of the UK’s most beloved coastal corners.

Why Camber Sands for Summer?

Not all British beaches are created equal. Camber Sands is something genuinely special, a wide, undulating stretch of golden sand backed by rolling dunes, with water that glitters blue-green on a clear July afternoon. No piers, no amusement arcades. Just sky, sea, and the kind of spaciousness that makes the world feel a little quieter.

For a summer break in East Sussex, Camber ticks every box:

  • Miles of beach, the sands stretch wide enough that even on busy days you find your own slice of space
  • Shallow, calm water, ideal for paddling, families, and confident swimmers alike
  • Unspoilt dune landscape, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and utterly gorgeous to explore on foot
  • Proximity to Rye, a perfectly preserved medieval town just 4 miles away, for those who want to mix culture with coast

VisitEngland named us Small Hotel of the Year 2024, and we think the setting has a lot to do with it. When your hotel sits steps from sand this good, everything feels more effortless.

Beach Days Done Right

A great Camber Sands summer day really doesn’t need much planning. Pack a bag, step outside, and follow the path to the beach. We’re right here, so it takes about two minutes.

A few things make the difference between a nice beach day and a perfect one:

  • Go early. The morning light over the dunes is extraordinary, and the beach is blissfully quiet before 10am. Many of our guests tell us an early dune walk before breakfast is the reset they didn’t know they needed.
  • Stay for sunset. The western sky over Camber turns extraordinary shades of amber and rose in summer. Take a glass from the terrace bar and find a dune to sit on.
  • Bring layers. Even in July, the coastal breeze can be refreshing. Embrace it, it’s what keeps everything fresh.

Dogs are very welcome on much of the beach outside the peak bathing season, and we’re always happy to point you toward the best stretches.

Water Sports

Camber Sands has become one of the UK south coast’s favourite spots for kitesurfing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, and with good reason. The long, shallow bay and consistent south-westerly winds make conditions genuinely excellent for beginners and more experienced riders alike.

Local operators run lessons and equipment hire right on the beach throughout the summer months. Whether you’ve never stood on a board before or you’re looking to refine your kite technique, there’s a session for you. Our team can point you in the right direction, just ask at the desk.

Even if active water sports aren’t your thing, the sight of kite surfers arcing through the blue above the shoreline is one of the great joys of a summer afternoon on the beach.

Events & Yoga

Summer at The Gallivant means a full programme of events, evenings, mornings, and everything in between. Think moonrise yoga on the beach, guest masterclasses, seasonal suppers on the terrace, and community beach cleans that somehow turn into the most uplifting mornings of the year.

Our yoga programme runs daily throughout the summer and is genuinely one of the things guests talk about long after they’ve left. Daily flow classes take place either in our serene studio or, when the weather is kind, wild on the beach, with the tide coming in at the edge of your mat. The sound, the salt air, the quality of the teachers, many guests tell us it’s the best yoga they’ve ever done, anywhere.

Alfresco Dining at Harry’s

A beach holiday on the UK south coast deserves food that matches the setting, and Harry’s delivers exactly that. Our French-inspired bistro by the sea, led by the brilliant Matthew Harris, is where seasonal ingredients from nearby farms and the wider East Sussex larder arrive in the kitchen and leave as something genuinely wonderful.

In summer, the terrace is the place to be. Informal lunches in the sunshine. Candlelit dinners as the sky slowly dims over the dunes. A glass of something cold after a long walk on the beach.

The menu shifts with the season, so what you eat in July will be a little different from June, which is half the pleasure. Ingredients are sourced as locally and sustainably as possible, and the kitchen cooks with real care.

Explore Harry’s Restaurant for the current menu and to make a reservation. Booking ahead in summer is strongly recommended.

Booking Tips for Summer

Summer fills quickly at The Gallivant and for good reason. A few things to bear in mind when planning your East Sussex summer break:

  • Book direct. Booking through our website gives you access to the best available rates and our current seasonal offers, which are exclusive to direct guests.
  • Weekends go fast. July and August weekends are our busiest. If you have flexibility, mid-week stays are a wonderful option, quieter beach, calmer pace.
  • Consider a longer stay. So many guests tell us two nights isn’t enough. Three or four nights gives you time to settle into the rhythm of the place, beach walks, yoga, long dinners, proper rest.
  • Browse our rooms. From snug cabin retreats to larger garden rooms, every room is beautifully considered. See all room options here.

We’d love to have you with us this summer. Check availability and book your stay, or call us on 01797 225 057 and we’ll help you plan something just right.
